Should I buy a macbook now or wait for Nehalem?
Intel is supposed to release its Nehalem (i7) micro-architecture next year, which, according to preliminary estimates will give about 30% performance per core, and will double the number of existing cores to a total of four. On top of that Nehalem will utilize QuickPath which will boost the memory throughput, and will force the laptop maker to support up to 6GB of ram due to its on chip memory controller. And on top of that it will utilize HyperThreading which will make the four physical cores appear as eight logical cores to the operating system.
HOWEVER,
The new macbooks are damn sweet and my iBoog G4 has been getting a bit aged. So, should I wait another year for Nehalem, or should I cough up 2K for a macbook now?
If your current laptop is doing everything you need it to do then you're probably better off holding off on buying a new one for the moment (in fact the time to buy a new one would be when what you've got isn't doing what you need it to) and save your money (and get a better computer when you actually do need something new). The best time to buy a new computer is always next month but if you follow that rule strictly you'll never buy one because every month you'll be waiting for next month, buying when your current computer can't do what you need it to can get you around it without causing you to waste money on a computer you don't need.
RAM support with current Intel processors depends on the chipset with the 945 and 965 mobile chipsets supporting 4 GiB and the new 45 mobile chipsets supporting 8 GiB (though some value models might support less).
