98 BMW 318i Oxygen sensor problem?
I just replaced new Bosch PreCat Oxygen sensor on my car and then test drive.
I cleared all faulty code before test drive and Check Engine light didn't come back during the test dirve. After returned to my garage, noticed unusual gas kind of smell from my muffler. Re-checked faulty code and it showed "PreCat Oxygen sensor failure" and Check Engine light came back. Is this normal when replaced new Oxygen sensor or my sensor is bad?
My 318i has two oxygen sensors. One is Pre Cat and the other is post Cat. My faulty reader said PreCat failure.
There is something wrong with the new 02 sensor you installed.
It does not take long for a BMW vehicle to determine that an 02 sensor is not working properly. It only needs a few minutes. And being a critical portion of the emissions system which could potentially damage the catalytic converter it sets a fault fast (it does not wait for the usual 3-times fault history). I think the Bosch sensor you installed is not fit for your engine, or even if technically "would" fit does not match the wirings of your vehicle and needs some wirings/pin adjustments. Or maybe you did not install it properly (not tight enough,
or overtight and got damaged), or the cable connector is not properly plugged in.

By the way, why did you replace the pre-cat 02 sensor in the first place, and what was the fault if any?
If as you said the fault was for a cam sensor, why did you put in an 02 sensor? Take out the mismatched 02 sensor and put in a cam sensor (inlet or exhaust as the case may be depending on the actual fault code.
