What other businesses do General motors own?
I know they own Buick, pontiac, chevrolet,saab-scania,hummer,cadillac, corvette, saturn and Vauxhall/Opel. Is there anything else?
They don't own Scania.
General Motors owns outright:
Domestic:
GMC - North American light and medium-sized trucks
Chevrolet - Various low-end vehicles, depending on the market. Also the Corvette (I know it's a separate marque in some markets, but not in its home market)
Pontiac - Supposedly like Chevrolet minus trucks, but more performance-oriented. Mostly, though, that has just meant adding weird-looking body work.
Buick - For old people who think Cadillac is too ostentatious.
Cadillac - For old people who think Buicks make them look poor.
Saturn - Mission keeps changing. Nowadays it's their European import division.
Hummer - They bought this in the 90s, then began a descent into poseurdom madness...and it looks like they're turning back from the precipice
Defunct:
Oldsmobile - It was, market-position-wise, identical to Buick. Had no reason to continue existing.
Geo - GM's former Japanese-import division. Sold Isuzus, Suzukis, and Toyotas.
Europe:
Saab - they do NOT own Scania (VW is the largest shareholder), or Saab aviation. ("born from jets" my ass)
Vauxhall and Opel - European Chevrolet but with different cars. (I'm pretty sure they mostly have the same cars, but they're separate companies)
Other:
Daewoo - When Daewoo went bankrupt, GM came in and picked up the pieces. That Daewoo managed to go bankrupt IN KOREA, with its protectionist practices, speaks volumes about Daewoo quality. To be fair, the Asian currency crisis had happened just recently. OTOH, Hyundai, Samsung, and Kia didn't have any trouble. Now Daewoos are sold as Chevrolets and Suzukis in other markets
Holden - Australia's GM marque. Their RWD platforms are going to save Pontiac.
Part ownership:
Suzuki - They had 20 percent until recently. Not a controlling stake, but enough to ensure that they can sell Suzuki models if they need to, and enough to convince Suzuki USA that selling Daewoos was a good idea. (It isn't) That stake has gone down to 3%. Maybe Suzuki will wake up re: this Daewoo bullshit.
Until recently:
Subaru - Their stake was sold to Toyota.
Isuzu - Their stake was sold last year.
Other businesses:
GMAC - GM's finance company...until last year it was wholly-owned by GM. They sold 51 percent to other companies. This had been the most profitable GM business. So people were thinking WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY DOING!? But now with the sub-prime meltdown, it's looking pretty smart. GMAC took a bit of a hit from that.
NUMMI - They still own a joint-venture factory with Toyota in California. It makes the Toyota Corolla, Toyota Tacoma, and Pontiac Vibe.
