My dad's 2002 Chevy Cavalier (Indigo Blue Metallic) had some rust on the right side of the hood so he got some duplicolor. It's the perfect color match but the finish looks nothing like the rest of the car.
1. Sanded it down
2. Put base coat
3. Actual Paint Color (Duplicor match)
4. Finely sanded it to get the grain out (Grain from metallic)
5. Put clear top coat
Now it looks like crap. It has very little shine compared to the rest of the cars original paint job. It is still a bit dull.
You can get it to turn out right, but there are many variables to address. First of all, if you sprayed the clear coat when it was an overly humid day it would become cloudy. Secondly, you always need to clean the surface you are about to paint... After sanding the metallic grain there is a considerable amount of dust. If you didn't clean it, then all that dust became trapped in the clear coat clouding the finish. At this point, I would suggest wet sanding the clear coat with 2000 grit sandpaper and lightly buffing. This will bring out the shine in the clear coat.
