Can a loose gap on a car give a faulty signal that the EGR valve is bad?
I have a 2004 Impala with the 3.4 V6. On 11-20-10, Saturday, in the afternoon my check engine light came on and it stayed on the rest of that day. I went to Auto Zone to get it tested and the code was P0401, EGR system fault, This is what the receipt says. The ECM has detected too little flow on the EGR system. Probable causes, blocked passage on EGR system, failed EGR valve, EGR solenoid faulty, Failed EGR pressure sensor where applicable, and failed EGR position sensor where applicable.
On that day, 11-20-10, I replaced my gas cap with an aftermarket one. I thought the gas cap could be the problem and the one I had on the car was the original. Well the next day when I drove the car the light never came on and currently the light is still not on. My question is, can a loose gas cap cause a faulty signal? Also, is the gas cap part of the EGR system in any way?
the computer runs the tests in an order. if one test fails, the next one might not be run as the first one would have an effect on the next. in your car the evap monitor just might eliminate the egr test. if that is the case then yes the loose gas cap can trigger a light. that cap is not a part of the egr system directly in any way but the computer is set up to run the tests in an order under specific conditions. if one test fails the next test might not even be run.
