I Have a 2000 Celica GT with the Check light Engine On?
check engine light is on and according to Autozone is throwing codes P0171 - "system too lean bank 1" and P0441 - Evaporative emission control system Incorrect purge flow.
The car is also burning a little oil and is exhibiting one additional strange behavior...
It wants to stall out but only right after filling the car with gas.
The car was also recently in a traffic accident where some body work (new hood) and needed a new radiator and A/C.
Any idea where to start? For P0441 maybe carbon/charcoal canister, gas cap? For P0171 could there be carbon build up around EGR valve or in intake manifold?

You have come to the right place for this one. 171 code.....remove the mass air flow sensor from the air cleaner box. It has 2 phillips screws and a 5 or 6 wire connector on it. Mare sure it is cold (important) and spray brake cleaner into the interior of it. A couple short bursts of spray should remove the build up from the hot wire inside the sensor. When you are done spraying, empty the brake cleaner from the sensor and allow to dry before restarting. Please take noth of the o ring type gasket on the sensor body, you will need to lubricate it before re installation. Be careful and take care installing. They aren't available seperatley and can cause another lean condition if it gets torn.
As far as the 441, without a scan tool, I wouldactually inspect the canister for actual "spider" intrusion. I have seen plenty of spiders go inside the vent tubes on the canister and make a blockage which can cause a malfunction. If you see one, get it out with a wire or similar instrument.
That is my best advice to you without more than spending 3 bucks on brake cleaner and investing a little time. If you see what i described and fix it, remove the ECU fuse for a minute and reinstall and drive, if you still have the problem, the light will reset for the same conditions.
I make no guarantees on the 171 code but have cleaned many of them for plenty of customers and fixed their "bug." It is possible that you have a bad sensor but 99 out of a 100 are just dirty. When you look inside with a flashlight you will see an ash type of build up on the hot wire which is tripping the light.
Been with Toyota since 1992, forget chiltons.
