Toyota MR2 high mileage question?
I've been looking to buy an MR2 recently and have found one that's looking in excellent aesthetic condition as it has just been re-sprayed, and although there isn't much service history the owner seems to be a genuine guy that has looked after his car well.
The guy's been really helpful with trying to reach a price that suits us both by removing his non-standard exhaust, steering wheel and HUD, but I'm just a little unsure about the mileage.
It's currently done 125,000 miles. I keep hearing that a car can have done much more than this and still be running in tip top condition, but I can't help but be warey of it with the lack of much service history.
Would you say I'm being too cautious about this purchase? What can go wrong after this mileage that will be expensive to repair?

What model MR2 are you referring to? The first generation MR2 engine was remarkable for its time. But will burn itself out near 150,000 miles. This engine is very hard to replace as it is a highly sought after engine in the perfomance market...
The first generation supercharged engine will not work well if the supercharger is dead. This engine is extrememly rare also...
The second generation MR2 non turbo engine is actually one of Toyota's most durable and reliable engines ever designed...They are remarkably bullet proof going well into 200,000 plus plus miles easily. This engine uses a timing belt and that would probably need changing. Also replace the belts...The engine is not hard to find parts for, but servicing this engine is hard (mid engine). The labor cost is higher with an MR2
The turbo engine is not drivable if the turbo goes out, and if the turbo is gone just forget about it. For you do not know if the car was actually driven with a dead turbo (detrimental to the engine). This engine uses two turbos and labor costs are high.
The Third Generation MR2 only had a 140 h.p. non turbo Corolla engine. That engine is also pretty much bullet proof. It uses a timing chain and distributerless ignition. Comes with Iridium plugs etc. It is hard to kill this engine. If the exhaust does not smell like burned oil then the internals are probably in good condition. You would just have to check if belts have been replaced. The invidual coils are expensive if they go out. But otherwise no other problems with this engine.
Any non turbo MR2 is pretty much very very reliable and it would take a huge lack of maintaince to kill one.
