I want to build a 500 hp small block chevy and I've done my research to achieve these numbers but I"m just curious if 1 3/4 primary with 3" collector would be worth the extra money over a set with 1 5/8 primary and 3" collector, I want to go with 3" dual exhaust with x pipe and Hooker Aero Chamber mufflers... Any answers will be greatly appreciated
yes the 1 3/4 could build a little more hp. over the 1 5/8 if it's on the right engine. and from the sounds of it yours could very well be the one. you pretty much need an engine with valves no smaller then 2.02 or even some race heads with 2.05 yes they are out there for small chevys. and also some very large cc intake and exaust runners. with out those 2 you are pretty much wasting your money becase you won't get raelly any benifit. now keep in mind that you still may want to use the 1 5/8 headers depending on what you are going to use the engine for. if you are going to use it for an all out race engine and it's going to spend most of it's time at or above say 3500-4000 rpm then go for the 1 3/4 pipes. but if you are going to use it in a muscle car to tear up tires or in a truck to tow or for brut force then go with the 1 5/8 pipes. the smaller pipes help build more torque and hp. is only 1/2 of the equation. torque is what gets you off the line in a hurry and what puts you back in the seat when you nail it going up that hill. hp is your top end speed torque is what gets you there. so you'll have to decide what you want the engine for then you can make an informed judgement on the right headers.
