How does an aftermarket intake affect emissions?
I was just wondering b/c I recently passed california emissions but have a hot-air intake (just a cone inside the engine bay, not a cold air intake that has piping to outside air) and they could have failed me for the visual inspection but didn't (they were nice). My car passed the emission easily. The cone is not legal, it's a K&N, but a racing cone which K&N says is not emissions legal.
How do aftermarket intakes affect emissions? They only allow more air to easily enter, so I thought the only things that could affect emissions are everything past the headers, once the air has already passed through the engine and mixed with the gas. How does more free flowing air entering your engine affect the amount of gas coming out your tailpipe?
Its not so much that it effects emmissions, which really it doesnt, but any modification to the engine can be considered an emmissions issue. From what I hear Cali is terrible when it comes to modifications and inspections. To be safe, purchase an intake from a reputable company like AEM, Injen, K&N (the entire intake kit, not just the cone filter) as alot of those companies are 50 state legal and you can get an emmissions sticker which must be displayed under your hood for that part.
