Left Header Cat

terrible exhaust rattle?
i have a 2001 Chevy Silverado 2500hd with the 6.0l v8. about a year ago, i replaced the stock muffler with an aftermarket dynomax muffler... the exhaust pipes, cats, and headers are still original to the truck. only until recently, it has been making this horrible rattling sound when i drive from all the vibration, so i took my truck back to Midas who installed the muffler. they diagnosed that one of my oxygen sensors was loose. they banged on the pipe itself, and it actually sounded like the rattling was coming from the o2 sensor. even though my o2 sensor was still working, they said the noise can only be fixed if they replaced it for nearly 300 bucks. of course, i said 'hell no,' and left. i have been told it isn't that hard to replace the sensors myself, but i was wondering if that is even the cause of my problem. has anyone encountered this problem before? the noise is driving me crazy
In all my years as an automotive technician, I have never replaced an oxygen sensor because it was rattling. I suspect the catalytic converter is the culprit here. Put the vehicle up in the air and pound the bottom of the catalytic converter with your fist, I suggest doing this when the vehicle has had a chance to cool down. If the converter is coming apart inside, you will hear the rattle. Otherwise, check all the exhaust heat shields, especially around the welds. If you find a broken weld or a loose shield you can buy an over sized exhaust clamp to wrap around it and tighten is securely. Another option is to simply remove the loose shield. My guess is your catalytic converter needs replacing. ASE technician for 25 years.
