'96 Dodge 2500, Ext Cab, Long Bed, Diesel?
I just recently had to have the original exhaust fixed, and due to cost of a muffler, went to straight pipes from the down tube out.(did not have stacks put on...original exhaust rout)
My fuel mileage has gone to sh!t in a hand basket.
My question is do they need to have some back pressure to run correctly, or do I need to get the injectors retimed.
Was averaging 18MPG now has dropped to around 16.
Does worse while towing.
No one has come up with the correct salution yet...no back pressure problems, the terbo is not the correct answer either.
The Diesel needs NO, read me... NO back pressure.
Your problem is somewhere else.
I'm not a huge Diesel person, but Banks Power exhaust would not have 5 inch pipes if back pressure was something to worry about being to little!
The turbo provides any and all back pressure the engine might benefit from, and that goes for just about all turbo cars.
I would check what boost your running, if you have a Gage. Opening up that exhaust probably allowed that turbo to spin a bit faster and that extra couple psi of boost might cause you to loose a couple mpg. Could be fixed by manually adjusting your wastegate or getting a power programmer.
