I have a 98 olds achieva. I am almost certain that the cat converter is clogged up or broken. Instead of replacing it I am considering deleting the cat converter from the exhaust system and adding a pipe in its place. The O2 sensor is located behind the cat. If i removed the cat I would still be able to keep the O2 sensor. What I am wondering is what will happen to the O2 sensor if I remove the cat and also how will it affect my ECU readings on lean/rich mixture. Also my car has 2 O2 sensors (one located on the exhaust manifold and the other behind the cat). What I want to know is if i can remove my cat with limited effects or none at all to my fuel efficiency etc. (I only want to know the effects that the O2 sensor will have don't try to tell me about backpressure or that it's illegal etc.)
It wont effect back pressure(back pressure is mainly created by curves and the muffler) and it is illegal.
but heres what you wana know.
The Second o2 sensor is there so the car's ecu can verify that the cat is working. The first o2 sensor will read the mixture if you are running lean or rich, the first o2 sensor will signal the ecu to change the Air fuel ratio.
So removing the cat will set off a check engine light error saying low cat efficiency.
You can find an adapter to spoof the signal from the second o2 sensor to make the computer think the cat is there.
since you only have 2 o2s it should not effect your air fuel ratio. Just set the light. If you had 3 or 4 o2 sensors than it would most likely make it run rich and waste gass. Just remember you wont pass emissions without a cat and there is a federal fine for removing/hollowing it.
