I have done alot of research online and I am getting conflicting solutions.
I have heard that it is either the
1)Catalytic converter (is it the front or back?)
2)bad o2 sensor
3)Ecu needs to be reprogrammed (ecu causing the code, and upgraded ecu has a larger range)
Could someone help with the troubleshooting? Is the reprogramming issue applicable to 2002's? Is there a way to check if your ecu has already been reprogrammed by a prior owner?
I would say 1 or 2 as the most likely, 3 is not probable, causes as i am sure you have read are: Leaded fuel was used where unleaded was called for An oxygen sensor is not reading (functioning) properly
The engine coolant temperature sensor is not working properly
Damaged or leaking exhaust manifold / catalytic converter / exhaust pipe Retarded spark timing The oxygen sensors in front and behind the converter are reporting too similar of readings.
I would check for exhaust leaks, then check the wiring to the o2 sensors, and if all else fails take it to a shop and they can use a scope to get the waveform readings from the sensors, see if it is one of them or possibly a new catalytic converter is needed.
I would ignore the suggestion that the ECU needs to be reprogrammed this is rare.......This message just means that the cat is not being as efficient as it should be, in other words the platinum catalyst inside is not doing its job according to the computer.
