Ok, i've just completed rebuilding a 1966 mustang 200ci engine and i am attempting to start it. The spark plugs fire, and to prime the carb, i poured some gas down the carb. Anyway, i got someone to turn the engine over and when he did that i saw a flame shoot out of the exhaust manifold. During the rebuild i had a problem with the distributor so i took it out of the engine and i put it back in as close to where it was originally was but i am not too sure if the timing is correct. Also during the rebuild, one exhaust manifold bolt broke so i drilled it out and put a new bolt in but it is not too tight on the head. Any way, I have not started it i have only turned it over. So, my questions are, What would cause a flame to shoot out of the exhaust manifold (with no exhaust pipe connected)? And, Would it be bad for the engine if i tried to start it again?

Put the #1 cylinder on 4 deg before top dead center compression stroke. Then position the distributor so that the points will cause a spark on the #1 cylinder. Lock it down. Where the distributor position was originally has nothing to do with where it has to be now. I'll presume your valve timing is correct.
If your valve timing is correct with the crankshaft position, then the blue flame is nothing to worry about. 100% of the fuel that gets into the cylinder doesn't get burned until it gets out the exhaust.
