Pipe Flange Repair

How does one repair external overflow in old style bathtub?
I have an old style bathtub with an external overflow - that is, there is a tube next to the tub with a plunger that controls the drainage. Prior to my use of the tub, a stopper had been used as the plunger no longer stops drainage. I would like to fix things, but am unsure of what was there originally. The plunger has a metal flange that appears to sit in the top of the drainage pipe (water enters the drain from the bathtub side). However, it does not sit firmly. Perhaps at one time there were some sort of gaskets for both the plunger and the seat. Any help on locating parts or fabricating a fix would be much appreciated.
you will need to get a "Waste and Overflow Kit for Bath Tub Drains"

probably will need one that can be adjusted for height as well as the reach from outside the tub to the drain.
