Hey guys my friend has a 1998 Camaro, with the 3.8L V6. Recently his exhaust fell off, yes, fell off, right in front of the cat, so now he is running with an open cross over, so basically, jsut the manifolds, and the downpipe. His rear o2 sensor is unplugged, and everything. its super loud. His car smells horrible just driving, and even worse on cold start ups, and such. just smells horrible. Gas mileage has gone down the drain and everything.
Now is there anything that can be damaged by this in the long run, and even shrot term, by having such an open exhaust, and hence back pressure? Thanks for the help!
Yes it can damage the engine, his wallet, environment and people near that. Cos as you said its O2 sensor is unplugged, it means his cars ecu doesnt know the O2 % of exhaust, hence it cant get the best fuel-air mixing ratio. That means engine gets not the right mixture so its efficiency gets lower. Because of that in long run, engine can has bad effects (probably thats the cause for the bad cold starts). Also as the changed back pressure it gets even worse.
So this can mean burning too much fuel, so economically its surely bad.
As you said the "silencer" isnt working so it generates huge noise, this creates sound pollution, so excess noise can have effects like hearing problems.
Bad smell "could" means it emmits gasses (like so2 etc.) that creates harmfull effects, so its also pollute air. So these gases can cause health problems,and by exposure to some of this gases for longer time might even cause death !
