what does "cat back" in catback exhaust mean?
a tech told me not to change anything but the muffler to gain horse powe isthat true? or is he an idiot... im lost when it comes to exhaust. what do i need to maximize horse power and torque? brands ....websites? also i drive a 05 chevy cobalt ss/sc
"Cat-Back" refers to anything attached to the exhaust system after the catalytic converter, usually a muffler.
There are other things you can do to increase your torque & horsepower, changing out the muffler is just one of them. You should check with your local laws to see what is legal for you to do in your area. Installing certain types of mufflers, removing your catalytic converter, changing out the chip in your car's computer, and other things you can do to increase power are sometimes, if not always, illegal. You should also check to see if any alterations you're considering will void your car's warranty or interfere with your car's other systems.
Something as simple as making sure your filters are clean, changing to all synthetic fluids (oil, transmission, etc), tuning your engine, or switching to a higher octane fuel will give you a power boost.
