My truck has a built up SBC350, OEM exhaust manifolds. Each manifold has its own straight pipe, no converters or mufflers, just true duel straights. Each pipe follows the frame pretty much straight as an arrow to the rear wheels then it curves up over the axle up near the bed, does some bends, and back down then does a 90 degree turn into 18" long, 4" diameter tips...Its already loud as sin but I want more...I want to cut the pipe off right over the axle (removing all those bends and the tip) and clamp on a turn down style pipe so that it exits right after the axle. I know that my tips are really helping to increase the sound, but will removing all that bend in the pipe after the axle give me a boost in sound? or will it actually reduce the sound I hear already?
You will soon be making no noise at all if you have it coming out where you want to. The exhaust exits where it does because the fumes will be drawn into the car. The fumes get sucked into the low pressure area's and seeps into the car, same sort of effect as putting a hose into the exhaust. Just drive with the boot open to see. Change the design to side exit for your own safety, close to the rear wheel is a preferred location.
Shorter pipes do make more noise, if you are going to have it coming from the manifold have it coming from the bonnet so the air flow takes it away from the car
