When buying a USED breast pump?
I have been looking at breast pumps and getting recommendations from others and from what I have heard it is a waste of money to buy one of the cheap pumps. Most people say the Medela Pump In Style is the best one. I can't afford $300 so I have been looking on craigslist and I found a great deal on a used one. I have two questions before purchasing it. How do I know if it works? And I know when you buy a used pump you are suppose to replace some parts that the milk goes through so nothing is transferred. But what parts need to be replaced? I think the tubing, shields, and valves, is that correct?
You do not need to replace the tubing. Just the valves and shields. The only thing that goes through the tubes is air. Milk never comes in contact with them. As far as how to tell if it works, that is a tough one. It's not like you can test it out. You can put the motor on and hook up all the pieces and make sure it is operating. You can put your hand over the shield and see if it has some suction. I'd ask how old the unit is. Maybe try to buy one that is less than 5 years old.
