SBC twin turbo set up on 305?
Wondering what i can expect from running 3-6lbs of boost on stock internals. the TT kit is only 1k, with t4 turbos, headers, and intercooler + all tubing and hardware....what internals would i have to build to run more boost? thanks
For 1K you must be looking at the Ebay kits. I'd recommend doing lots of research first because those Ebay kits have a bad rep. I guess the turbos are cheap foreign made units and sometimes the gauge of the steel isn't good enough. I contacted some of those turbo kit sellers on Ebay and they were very unprofessional. I asked them if there were any customer testimonials and so forth, but they gave me really vague responses that didn't answer my question.
Check out turbomustangs.com. There are good turbo forums there that can answer your questions. Despite the name, they have forums for ANY type of car (GM, Dodge, Ford, everything).
If you have a 305 with stock internals, you shouldn't run more then 5-6lbs of boost to be safe. As far as power is concerned, it depends on what kind of 305 it is. For example, a 305 HO will make more power then a 305 2-barrel block. For more boost, you would need to install a forged rotating assembly that can handle the extra abuse (ex. Eagle crank + rods, JE pistons). I wouldn't put a $1500 forged rotating assembly in a 305 though. If you're going to rebuild the entire engine anyways, just start with a 350 block.
I did the exact same thing as you. I have a El Camino with a mild 8.5:1 350 and I came across those cheap turbo kits on Ebay. But then I started asking about them in turbo forums and found out they are cheaply made. If you're like me and are kind of a do-it-yourself guy but don't want to fabricate a complicated turbo setup, I'd look into a Weiand 142 or 144 mini blower. They are a small single carb roots blower that safely bolts right onto a stock SBC and develops 5psi boost. They can make more boost with different pulleys but you don't want to have higher then 5psi on a SBC with stock internals because a blower makes boost instantly. On a 305 you would need to get different pulleys because the pulleys that come with the kit are designed for a larger 350 SB. So you'll make more boost due to the smaller engine size. But that's what I'm gonna install on my 350. I don't really want to screw around with turbo kits right now.
Hope that helps!
